    Translators, like the members of any other professional group, are likely to encounter a variety of ethical issues in the practice of their profession. In some countries, codes of conduct exist that set out guidelines on issues such as quality guarantees, impartiality, independence and secrecy. In addition to highlighting a few technical issues such as reliability and errors, in this article we will focus on specific moral dilemmas that frequently occur in the translation process. Some of those issues are minor, for example when the translator decides to use a term that does not quite cover the source but adds to the quality of the target text. An example of a major ethical issue would be whether or not to do a translation that might be used for illegal purposes.
